Exercise 3.1.4 The statement \(S(n)\) is that 8 divides \(9^n-1\text{.}\) Clearly we have
\begin{align*} 9^1-1=8\amp =1\cdot 8,\\ 9^2-1=80\amp =10\cdot 8\text{.} \end{align*}Hence \(S(1)\) is true and \(S(2)\) is true as well. Assume that \(S(k)\) is true for some \(k\in\mathbb{N}\text{.}\) It remains to prove that \(S(k+1)\) is true. We have that \(S(k)\) is true, that is, 8 divides \(9^k-1\text{.}\) Hence there exists an integer \(A\) such that \(9^k-1=8\cdot A\text{.}\) It remains to prove that \(9^{k+1}-1\) is a multiple of 8. We have that

Exercise 3.1.5 The statement \(S(n)\) is that 6 divides \(5^{2n-1}+1\text{.}\) We compute \(5^{2n-1}+1\) for some small values:

Exercise 3.1.6 Here we deal with the sum of the first \(n\) odd integers. For \(n\in\halmaz{1,2,3,4,5}\) we have

Exercise 3.1.11 Let us compute the first few elements of the sequence

Exercise 3.1.12 We note that there is a solution in Chapter 5 which does not use induction. Here we will prove it by induction. Our statement \(S(n)\) is that the number
\begin{equation*} f(n)=\left(\frac{3-\sqrt{33}}{2}\right)^n+\left(\frac{3+\sqrt{33}}{2}\right)^n \end{equation*}is an integer and it is a multiple of 3. Let us consider the statement for \(n=1\) and 2. If \(n=1\text{,}\) then we get that \(f(1)=3\text{.}\) So it is an integer and it is a multiple of 3. If \(n=2\text{,}\) then we have
\begin{equation*} f(2)=\frac{9-6\sqrt{33}+33}{4}+\frac{9+6\sqrt{33}+33}{4}=21\text{.} \end{equation*}Again we obtained an integer that is divisible by 3. Assume that \(S(k-1)\) and \(S(k)\) are true for some \(2\leq k\in\mathbb{N}\text{.}\) We will use the fact that the numbers \(\frac{3-\sqrt{33}}{2}\) and \(\frac{3+\sqrt{33}}{2}\) are roots of the quadratic equation

Exercise 3.2.4 Assume the opposite, that is, the number \(\sqrt{2}+\sqrt{3}\) is rational. Then there exist \(a\) and \(b\) such that \(\sqrt{2}+\sqrt{3}=\frac{a}{b}\) for some \(a\in\mathbb{Z}\) and \(b\in\mathbb{N}\) and the greatest common divisor of \(a\) and \(b\) is 1.
